Skin after 45: what changes in menopause, and what you can do
One day your usual cream stops working. Your skin feels tight by midday, the lines around your mouth look deeper, and your jawline isn't quite where it used to be. Nobody warned you it could change this fast. If you've been searching "menopause skin dry and saggy" late at night, you're far from alone.
In a Galderma survey of 4,300 women aged 45 to 60, women reported on average three skin changes during menopause: lines, loss of firmness, dryness and dullness. Two-thirds said these changes made them feel less attractive. And more than 30% wished they'd known about it in their 30s.
Why it happens
- Hormones shift. As oestrogen drops, skin tends to become thinner, drier and less firm. This is natural, not a failure of your skincare.
- Firmness fades. Skin loses some of its bounce, and gravity shows more along the jaw, cheeks and neck.
- Dryness and dullness. Skin holds less moisture and renews more slowly, so it can look flat and tired.
- Stress and sleep. Hot flushes and broken nights are common, and a tired body shows on a tired face.
- Muscles hold tension. Years of frowning, clenching and screen time leave the facial muscles tight in some places and slack in others.
Quick self-check
- Does your skin feel tight or rough within a few hours of moisturising?
- When you look down at your phone, does your jawline look softer than it did two years ago?
- Does your face look greyer or flatter, even with make-up?
- Do you wake up tired more often than not?
Recognise yourself in two or more? Your skin is asking for a little more care than before, and it's a good time to start.
What you can do today
- Switch to a richer moisturiser, and apply it on slightly damp skin.
- Use SPF every day, all year round. In Portugal the sun is strong even in winter.
- Cleanse gently: skip harsh scrubs and very hot water.
- Give your face 2 minutes of massage at night, upward and outward strokes, with a few drops of oil.
- Talk to your doctor or gynaecologist about menopause symptoms. Hormone questions belong with them, not with a beauty studio.
What facial lifting massage does
Our facial lifting massage works the muscles of the face, neck, shoulders and scalp. It doesn't change your hormones, but it works with what you can still change: muscle tone, tension and circulation.
- Lifts naturally: toning the facial muscles helps the contour look firmer, without injections
- Brings back glow: better circulation can help dull skin look fresher
- Relaxes: many clients find it the calmest hour of their week, which matters when sleep is patchy
For skin that needs more, ask about our Advanced Anti-Age treatment (€65), a skin treatment for mature skin. Your therapist will tell you whether it suits you and how to combine it with massage.

FAQ
Is it too late to start at 55 or 60? No. Muscles respond to work at any age. Many of our clients start in their 50s and 60s.
Can massage replace hormone therapy? No. Massage is about how your face looks and feels. Questions about hot flushes, sleep or hormone therapy are for your doctor.
My skin is very sensitive now. Is massage OK? Usually yes: tell your therapist and she'll choose gentler products and pressure. Skip it with inflamed skin, a rash or an allergy.
Who should wait? After a recent surgical facelift, less than 5 weeks after Botox or fillers, or with a fever or a contagious illness.
