Puffy eyes in the morning, dark circles all day?
You wake up and your eyes look like you've had three hours of sleep, even when you've had eight. The puffiness fades by lunchtime, but the shadows underneath don't. Concealer helps, until it creases. If you've ever searched "how to get rid of puffy eyes in the morning", this one is for you.
First, an honest point: puffiness and dark circles are two different things. One often responds well to massage. The other sometimes doesn't, and it's better to know that before you spend money.
Why it happens
- Fluid collects overnight. Lying flat for hours lets fluid gather in the soft skin around the eyes. Salty dinners, a glass of wine or a short night make it worse.
- Slow lymph flow. When drainage in the face is sluggish, the puffiness takes longer to go down.
- Tension around the eyes. Screens, squinting and stress keep the small muscles around the eyes and forehead working, and the area looks tired.
- Genetics and pigment. Some dark circles run in the family, or come from pigmentation or naturally thin skin under the eyes. Massage can't change your genes or your pigment.
- Allergies and health. Hay fever, sinus problems and some health conditions can cause swelling and shadows too.
Quick self-check: puffiness or dark circles?
- Is it worse in the morning and better by the afternoon? That's mostly fluid. Massage can help.
- Gently stretch the skin under your eye. If the darkness fades, it's often thin skin or shadow. Better circulation may soften it a little.
- If the colour stays the same whatever you do, and you've had it for years, it's more likely pigment or genetics. Talk to a dermatologist about options.
- Sudden swelling, swelling on one side only, or puffiness that doesn't go down by evening: see a doctor first.
What you can do today
- Sleep with your head slightly raised on an extra pillow.
- Go easy on salt and alcohol in the evening.
- In the morning, place a cool spoon or a cold, damp cloth on your eyes for a minute.
- Tap gently with your ring fingers under the eyes, from the inner corner outwards, then sweep down the sides of the neck.
- Wear sunglasses and SPF: sun can deepen pigmentation under the eyes.

FAQ
Will massage get rid of my dark circles? It depends on the cause. Puffiness and dullness often look better after massage. Dark circles from genetics or pigment usually don't change much; a dermatologist can tell you what will.
How fast will I see a difference? Many clients notice less puffiness right after the session. For a longer-lasting effect, start with weekly sessions; your therapist will suggest the rhythm.
I wear contact lenses. Is that a problem? Take them out before the session so your eyes can fully relax.
Who should wait? After a recent surgical facelift, less than 5 weeks after Botox or fillers, with inflamed skin, a rash or an allergy, or with a fever or a contagious illness.
