Clenched jaw, sore temples? Your face might be holding your stress
You wake up with a tight jaw. By 4 pm your temples ache. You catch yourself pressing your teeth together in front of the screen. Sound familiar? You're not alone.
Why it happens
- Stress goes to the jaw. Clenching during the day affects roughly 1 in 4 adults, and it's more common in women.
- Hard-working muscles. The masseter, your chewing muscle, is one of the strongest in the body. When it never switches off, it gets tight and tired.
- The pain travels. A tight jaw can pull on the temples, so you may feel it as a headache rather than "jaw pain".
- It shows on your face. A constantly clenched jaw can make the lower face look wider and harder, and the whole face look tired.
Clenching or grinding has a name: bruxism
Bruxism is the habit of clenching or grinding your teeth — during the day, often without noticing, or in your sleep. Over time the jaw muscles get overloaded: you wake up with a tired jaw, your temples ache and your face feels tight.
Buccal massage works directly on the muscles bruxism overloads — the masseter and cheek muscles, including from inside the mouth. That’s why many people with bruxism come to us: after a session the jaw feels looser and lighter.
3 quick checks
- Are your teeth touching right now? At rest, they shouldn't be.
- Do your cheeks or jaw feel tender when you press them?
- Do headaches start at your temples, often late in the day?
Two or more "yes" answers? Your jaw is probably working overtime.
What you can do today
- Lips together, teeth apart: repeat it whenever you notice clenching.
- Drop your shoulders and breathe out slowly for 5 breaths.
- Gently massage your cheeks in small circles for 1 minute.
- Take screen breaks: at least every hour.
What buccal massage does
Regular face massage works from the outside. Buccal massage goes deeper: wearing gloves, your therapist releases the jaw and cheek muscles from inside the mouth as well. That's where much of the tension sits.
Many of our clients come in with a jaw they can't relax. After a session, they usually say the same thing: the jaw feels lighter and the face feels softer.
- Releases tension in the jaw and lower face
- Depuffs and helps define the jawline
- Takes 20 minutes and adds to your facial massage

FAQ
Does it hurt? You'll feel firm pressure on tight spots. Your therapist adjusts it to you.
How often? Once a week for a few weeks works well when the jaw is very tight. Your therapist will suggest a plan.
Does buccal massage help with bruxism? It helps relieve the muscle tension bruxism causes, but it doesn't treat the cause. If you grind at night or your jaw clicks or locks, see your dentist — massage can be a good complement to their care.
Who should wait? Avoid it with mouth sores, recent dental work, fillers or botulinum toxin in the last few weeks, or a fever. Ask us if unsure.
